2018 NFL ICY HOT TD, Week 14

What the hell is NFL ICY HOT TD, anyway? I'll tell you—ICY HOT TD = In Case You Had Other Things To Do.

While some of us are able to watch NFL football all Sunday long and follow it up with postgame analysis/highlight shows well into the night...many of us can't. I aim to bring those fans bits of trivia, data, and news they likely missed on Game Day.


Such as:

 

  • On Thursday Night Football, Tennessee's Derrick Henry's 99-yard TD run aided a 30-9 victory over visiting Jacksonville; only Dallas's Tony Dorsett had ever done that before. Henry's 236 total rush yards eclipsed Chris Johnson's franchise record of 228, set in '09 against...Jacksonville.

  • Watch Henry simply shove defenders out of his way en route to glory:

  • Believe it or not, Henry scored three other rushing TD's that day—fantasy owners probably wet themselves—which tied two ex-Houston Oilers for most in franchise history. He's also the first to reach four TD and 200+ yards on fewer than 20 carries...take THAT, Al Bundy!

  • Buffalo fell to the Jets 27-23, but QB Josh Allen became the 2nd QB to rush for 90+ yards in three straight games (Tobin Rate of the 1951 Packers. Remember him?)

  • In this game, New York broke a string of 24 offensive possessions without a TD.

  • More from Buffalo: Jets KR Andre Roberts racked up 176 return yards, including an 86-yarder!

 

  • Remember Week 11 when Panthers QB Cam Newton overthrew an open Julius Wright on a would-be game-winning 2-point attempt? This time, visiting Cleveland, Cam missed an open Wright in the end zone on a crucial 4th-and goal at the 3. Clearly, someone told Cam that Wright is 10 feet tall, and he refuses to believe otherwise.

  • Newton did become the only QB besides Peyton Manning with 3K passing yards in each of his first eight seasons...feels weird he's been around that long already.

  • Nick Chubb of Cleveland became the first Brown in 43 years to rush for TD's in five straight games; his efforts (and Newton's) aided Cleveland's 26-20 home win vs. Carolina.

  • By reaching 359 consecutive interception-free passes, Green Bay's Aaron Rodgers passed Tom Brady for the all-time record in the Packers' 34-20 win over Atlanta. (It should be noted Rodgers fired a couple that should and could have been picked off.)

 

  • In the Chiefs' 27-24 home win over the Ravens, TE Travis Kelce became the first TE with 80 catches and 1K yards in three straight seasons.

  • This marked Baltimore's first loss at Arrowhead Stadium; they'd been 3-0 all-time since moving from Cleveland.

  • More from KC: Chiefs DL Chris Jones became the first to record a sack in nine consecutive games (of the same season) since the stat became official 36 years back.

  • As for Miami's miracle 34-33 comeback win over the Patriots...I can't describe "The Drake Escape"; you have to see it:

  • What you just saw was the NFL's longest winning play from scrimmage with 0:00 left since at least 1970.

  • More from Miami: RB Frank Gore passed Hall-of-Famer LaDanian Tomlinson for fifth place in all-time scrimmage yards (18,530 and counting). New England has now lost five of its past six in Miami.

  • The visiting Giants blew out Washington 40-16; RB Saquon Barkley became the first Giants rookie with 1K yards rushing. It had been since 11/1/2015 when New York last reached 40 points!

  • WR T.Y. Hilton's 11th 150-yard receiving game set a Colts record and helped them upend Houston 24-21. TE Eric Ebron's 12th receiving TD broke Indy's TE record held by Dallas Clark.

  • Not all bad news for Houston: DeAndre Hopkins became the 2nd-youngest WR with 7,000 receiving yards; only Larry Fitzgerald was younger (by about three months).

 

  • In L.A., the Chargers beat Cincy 26-21 with help from K Michael Badgley's team-record 59-yard FG. Nate Kaeding previously held the record (57-yarder in 2008).

  • The 49ers upset Denver 20-14 despite Denver's Bradley Chubb breaking Von Miller's rookie sack record with #12; Miller had 11.5 in 2011.

  • 49ers TE George Kittle became the team's first TE with 1K receiving yards in a season.

  • Dallas K Brett Maher drilled a 62-yarder in the Cowboys' 29-23 overtime home win over Philly. Interesting fact: in 2016, Dallas beat Philly at home...in OT...by the exact same score. (Minimizing the creep factor: that win was in October, not December.)

  • More from Dallas: Amari Cooper became the third Dallas WR with 200+ receiving yards and three TD's in one game; Michael Irvin and Frank Clark did so in 1992 and 1962, respectively.

 

  • Pittsburgh fell at Oakland 24-21, dropping QB Ben Roethlisberger to 0-4 all-time at the Coliseum.

  • Visiting Detroit beat Arizona 17-3—their first win there since 1993 (eight games)! Fitzgerald set a record for most receptions for one team (1,286).

  • Not much eventful went down in Chicago's gritty 15-6 win over the Rams on Sunday Night Football...except Rams RB Todd Gurley dropping the pass that would have kept my Fantasy season alive. I can't be too mad at him; he single-handedly brought me the championship last year.

  • The game's only TD was scored by Bears OL Bradley Sowell. That HAS to be an NFL first.

  • LA's point total, yards total and yards per play were all lows in the two-year (coach) Sean McVay era.

  • On Monday Night Football, Seattle sank Minnesota 21-7; the Vikings are 0-6 when allowing 100+ rush yards.
